I think my favorite R.A. Lafferty story is the novella, "The Three Armageddons of Enniscorthy Sweeney." Again, I say "I think" this is the case, because I seem to have bought the only two copies ever printed and then lent them to people who did not return them. Do other Laffety fans similarly find that there is a cosmic conspiracy to make RAL's books hard to get, even when you already have them? Or did I just imagine "The Three Armageddons" and there really is no such story?

Well, now, I wouldn't say that _Fourth Mansions_ is all that lame of a book. Admittedly Lafferty did tend to get a little too deep into his beat-mystic nonsense at times, but all in all a fair to middling book like they don't publish any more. _Arrive at Eastwine_ is a blazing ball of fire and it got me through a very dark period in my life, slaving in a light plastics factory and feeling doomed. (I'm still doomed, but at least I'm not sweating in front of the plastic sleeve press anymore. :)

I had never been so emotioned like now after discovering this page. I wonder what Anthony Trotz would have thought on this... (maybe he was given an internet account to start with...) ;-)

Goodness! There are others out there? Picked up a copy of "Does Anyone Else..." a few weeks ago for five dollars at a used bookstore here in Philadelhia. It has a different cover than the one illustrated on the page. My collection has grown and then shrunk and then grown again over the years. I keep giving copes away or they get appropriated by friends(?). Who has what to sell?

Reefs of Earth rules!!! I haven't read any of his other stuff. What would you reccommend?? Also, how to I get his out of print books? It took me forever to get a copy of the Reefs of Earth in Rhode Island, and I have not seen it out here in Hawaii.
Thanks!
matt

I have a bunch of letters that Neil (Sandman) Gaiman got from RAL when he was a 17 yr. old thinking of becoming a writer. If I have the energy I'll copy
a few of the more interesting parts to
the board later.

Well, I would like to contact with spanish Lafferty fans...

I have only one book of Lafferty in spanish and I would like to know where can I get any others...

My english is not THAT good so that I can fully enjoy his writings... but I'm trying very hard with "Arrive at Easterwine" and another books that include short stories (much easier to read).

Best Regards

erm, I'm genuinely gobsmacked that there's a Lafferty page on the internet.
I've been convinced for years that no one else had ever heard of him. I read 900 Grandmothers back in the Seventies and it's quietly haunted me for years. Slow Tuesday Night has stayed in my mind over the years, but I've never quite figured out why. At the time, I'd genuinely never read anything quite like it. He's a heckuva writer. Lafferty
(and Burroughs) inspired me to become a writer myself, albeit a hack comic script-writer...
At the risk of sounding sappy, It's nice to know that he's touched the lives of so many people. Truly a one-off
talent....

RAL still has a Tulsa listing:
1715 S. Trenton Ave.
Tulsa, Ok 74120-7211

In doing some work on Okla Hannali, I've tried to contact him by phone and get no answer. I assume his mail is forwarded.
I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has any lore or stories about L's writing of _Okla Hannali_.

Glad to see this page. Lafferty is probably too silly to ever be "accepted" into the "mainstream," a la Phil Dick, which is too bad. If you like Lafferty, I'd recommend the short stories of Corwainer Smith, who I recently got turned on to. He was another 60s-70s science fiction voice who has, alas, lapsed into obscurity. He has the same playful silliness and mythopoetical bombast as Lafferty. His characters are more rounded and full, as well - which isn't a criticism of Lafferty ("character" is simply not the point with him) - it's merely something that distinguishes them from each other.

To friends of Raphael A. Lafferty:

I am a cousin of Ray's who is helping him keep track of his bills and
correspondence. The mail to 1715 S. Trenton, Tulsa, OK is being
forwarded to my address, so I received your card or letter and sent
it to him. But I noted your return address so I could let you know
Ray's current residence:

<b>Franciscan Villa Health Care Center J-54
17110 E. 51st Street South
Broken Arrow, OK 74012</b>

He moved there after some health problems that needed more care than
he could get at home. He is doing well, and I'm sure would appreciate
hearing from you. Please understand if he is not able to reply to your
messages. I would be happy to help if you need to contact him.

Thanks for your mail.

Sincerely
Betsy Kennington
