First Entry

Hi this will be the weblog of Nat! It will be in German or it will be in English, whichever one of my split personalities wins the war against the other one.

Raison d'être

The world does not need this Web Journal but I think I do. It's kind of like Alcoholics Anonymous, where you force yourself to some sort of regiment, to get rid of a vice. My vice is excessive online video playing. I have come to the conclusion that I am wasting too much time on it. Here in Europe I am a fairly regular guest on some Urban Terror CTF servers, and if you play here, you might have been fragged to shit by some one with the monicker of Satchel Pooch or mORALISt. Urban Terror is a really good mod for Quake III. If you haven't tried it, check it out.

The problem is I have a heap of stuff I want to do and want to release, as there is in various states of completeness:

  • The PPC Reassembler, the distributed reverse engineering tool.
  • MulleSybaseEOAdaptor 2.0 for Sybase version 12 and up (with large table support)
  • The MulleMallocator, a very fast malloc implementation
  • Two articles for the Optimizing Objective-C series

I already ditched my TV at one time, to get rid of that time sucker, but getting rid of the PC is at the moment not possible. So the fact that you can't really play on a Mac doesn't help me much, because the PC is near by...

I hope that if I force myself to write this journal from Monday-Thursday, I will feel pissed of at myself, if the entry is just "didn't get anything done". Ok that's it for today. Tomorrow a little more groundwork at what to expect here :)

What to expect ?

The usual Mulle article has a gestation period of a month maybe more, with lots of research, testing, several rewrites and finally some quality checking by helpful Mulles. Quite in contrast this journal entry will be written in less than a quarter of an hour, with just the few things that are on my mind.

Since I am getting no money on this, this page is amateurish and dilettante by definition! Since I already have a job, I don't need to write staidly - always in fear of alienating a prospective bread givers. Har har.

So don't expect much :) If you expect the presentation to be professional or tasteful, fuck off :) to set the tone.

Scoreboard

CodingJust worked for the company, no Mulle coding
Gaming 40 min of Urban Terror, acceptable I think (so far)

Long day at work

Just found out that my install build server still runs 10.1.5 and that NSPropertyListSerialization is only available in 10.2. Then I wrongly upgraded the partition named Jaguar, which had a preview of 10.2 installed. Now I am upgrading the right partition named Mac OS X the one with the custom, self-written build system. That takes another 45 min and my last (cheap) train is gone. Next train is in two hours. Sucks....

Longer day at work

Found out that bash is now more finecky in regard to my shell scripts. Turns out that return 0 at the end of the script should really be exit 0. Well true, but before 10.2 that didn't matter. Well of course this script died in the middle of a series of scripts. So I have ample time to write another entry here, while the build system is grinding through 5000 files again.

Painful long day at work

Hmm why does my compilation say now that CoreServices.h doesn't find <OT/OT.h>, <NSLCore/NSLCore.h>, and <SecurityCore/SecurityCore.h>. Running fixPrecomps as a voodoo fix on it, that doesn't do anything. Since I have little time left, I opt to manually edit out OT.h NSLCore.h and SecurityCore.h from that Carbon Framework header, since I don't use them anyway.
So far so good.

Apple and their fucked up installation tools. Make memo, to completely reinstall 10.2 on that machine.

Later: Linking now gives /usr/lib/libSystem.dylib malformed object. I love it. Figure I should upgrade the developer tools, hoping that the new linker will wing this... Remaining installation time 59 min. ARGH!!!
