Frequently asked Questions

Q: The total number of articles shown by each newsgroup is rarely correct. Once one goes into the newsgroup and exits then the totals are O.K. Where does Alexandra get this total number, and is there a utility I can run to correct those totals?

A: They are computed from the highest numbered article available on the server and information on what articles have been read from your .newsrc file. This calculation will count articles that may have expired or been cancelled as unread as well as articles that would be marked as read by a kill file entry. To eliminate these from the article count would require doing it every time the active file is read and would slow things down a lot more.

There is only one way to correct the totals. Go into the group and back out again. To prevent gross errors, read news in your subscribed groups more often. Other than that, don't worry; you aren't missing anything.

Q: When I try to post I get this message:

441 posting failed 441 400 No space left on device writing article file - throttling.
I guess I know this means my post isn't going out, but it doesn't tell me what I need to do to get it to go out. Is this something on my machine or is it on the interent server I am using? What do I need to do? I tried your suggestin for setting SocketEcho and using script but it gave the same message.

A: This has nothing to do with Alexandra. What you see is an error message from the NNTP server you are connected to. Contact the administrator of the server an tell them that you got this error message, or, better, tell them to buy a bigger harddisk!
